Practical Person-Centred Strategies: Working with Individuals with Dementia
April 24 & 25 - Charlottetown
May 23 & 24 - Summerside
This two-day, interactive, hands-on workshop will enable participants to:
鈥 have a greater understanding of dementia
鈥 explain the stages of dementia
鈥 use practical interventions for various dementia-related behaviours
鈥 use practical strategies for navigation of activities of daily living
鈥 clarify assumptions and dispel myths
鈥 explain what is 鈥渘ormal鈥 aging vs dementia
鈥 experience what it is like to live with dementia
鈥 help with understanding caregiver stress and how to get support
Course fee:
$549 + HST
A special fee of $275 + HST is available to family care-givers of
individuals with dementia and seniors (60 years of age and over).
A limited number of seats are available at this rate.

The second annual UPEI Walk for Wishes will be held on April 6 at 2:00 pm at the Chi-Wan Young Sports Centre walking track.
This event is in support of the Children's Wish Foundation, PEI Chapter. Children鈥檚 Wish grants wishes to children between the ages of 3 and 17 who are facing a life-threatening illness. The wishes granted by the organization helps boost the morale of these children who are facing a tough time.
There will be prizes for top fundraisers including a pair of Ray Ban sunglasses! If you are interested in being part in this event, please contact Mark Scott at mascott@upei.ca.
All members of the community are welcome to join! Staff and faculty are encouraged to help recruit students as well as participate in this event.
The MA Island Studies program, in collaboration with the Institute of Island Studies, is hosting a lecture on Monday, April 8 (10:00 am, Faculty Lounge, Main Bldg) by Ms. Elizabeth (Ellie) Maclean, a PhD candidate from the University of Rhode Island. The talk is entitled 'The Importance of Local Ecological Knowledge in Small Scale Fisheries of the Dominican Republic.' Godfrey notes that Ellie is a member of the International Small Islands Studies Association (ISISA), and has authored the Hispaniola Contribution to A Taste of Islands (Island Studies Press, 2012).

We no longer require you to submit a separate request for set ups and take downs. The next time you request a room set up, in the Request Description box, you will include the details for both the set-up and the tear down. We will look after it from there. To avoid confusion, please provide all details for the set up first, then in a second paragraph, the details for the tear down. If you have a diagram of the setup, go to Step 6 and attach it to the work order request. If you would like to cancel or amend your request, please e-mail Karl at fmworkorders@upei.ca and provide him with the work order number and the details.
As a reminder, when you book the room, you request at least 2 hours before your event for set up and 2 hours for tear down.(Please call us if you have a large set up so we can advise you as to how much time you will need to book.) If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us in Facilities for assistance.

Two Soft Tissue Prevention information sessions will be offered by Dr. Darren MacLean. Anyone who is involved with physical work either at home or on campus should attend. The trainer will refresh us on proper lifting/moving techniques, strengthening stretches, and how to prevent back injuries and other soft tissue injuries.

Session 1: Friday, April 5, 2:00-3:00 pm / MCDH 246
Session 2: Tuesday, April 9, 10:00-11:00 am / Main 213
An Office Ergonomics Session will be offered by Marie Brine, Occupational Therapist on Thursday, April 18 from 2:00-3:30 pm. Location: TBD.
She will be reviewing information on proper work station set ups such as proper positioning of your chair, desk, keyboard, mouse, screen, phone, etc. for individual body type/size.
These information sessions are covered by the Health and Safety budget and are open to staff, faculty and students free of charge.
Please register in advance with Rylie Cole (rcole@upei.ca) as space is limited.
*Note: Those who attend the Office Ergonomics Session will be eligible to receive an office ergonomics assessment available through the wellness program with the Athletics & Recreation Department. Please note however the number of assessments will be dependent upon budget approval.
